Ayrshire is well-known for its spectacular coastline and other shorefront pursuits. It should, however, also be in the spotlight for the incredible inland areas. There are innumerable parks, woodland areas and gardens which are breath-taking and offer other options for a great Ayrshire day out.

Now take a look at some of the best parks in Ayrshire

Culzean Castle & Country Park

Culzean Castle and Country Park is one of Scotland's most popular parks, attracting both locals and tourists in their droves. Located 12 miles south of Ayr, it is a top spot for a day out and can become very busy in the Summer months.

It's easy to see why it is such a hit with everyone, the castle itself is a stunning example of Scottish history, and the castle tours offer a chance to see the beautifully restored rooms. It boasts one of the largest armoury collections and a quirky medieval tower.

Outside the castle, the vast grounds of this 600-acre estate have a lot to offer. There are beautiful gardens to enjoy, and a deer park.

Dean Castle and Country Park

Another real hit with visitors, Dean Castle and Country Park is located just north of Kilmarnock and has a lot to offer on its 200-acre site. It is continuing to grow in popularity thanks to a large re-development programme.

From grasslands to woodland, castle restoration and an urban farm, to historic trails, there is simply something for everyone and is a must-visit location.

Don't forget Deans Castle and Country Park is also home to the hugely popular event, Illuminight, during October and November.

Heads of Ayr Farm Park

Heads of Ayr Farm Park in Alloway is an absolute must for anyone with young children looking for a day out. It is impossible for any child to leave feeling bored, and it’s a top day out for the older visitors too.

The farm part of the park boasts both farmyard animals and more exotic species too, so you can visit anything from a little bunny to a squawking parrot, a nosy meerkat and a wallaby. If you or your little ones want to get a bit closer to the animals, the little critter animal barn lets you touch some of the animals, under the careful supervision of their handlers.

However, if the animals aren’t enough to keep your family entertained for a whole day you will not be disappointed with the other activities on offer. A huge adventure playground, quad biking, a sand pit and a wooden fort are just some of the outdoor activities to enjoy and on a rainy day there is an indoor soft play area and café.

Eglinton Country Park

Eglinton Country Park is another gem with a lot to offer. The lovely ruins of the castle are ideal for exploring, and the grounds it stands on are beautiful for a meander on any day.

Children can enjoy not one but three large play areas, and other activities available include horse riding and fishing. The huge space is a hit for walkers, cyclists and dogs and there is a café for refreshments to round off your trip.

Rozelle Park

Any nature enthusiast must make a trip to the incredible Rozelle Park. The park is steeped in rich history, but also boasts incredible woodland, parkland and more. The long walks lead you through beautiful flowers, and combine mature woodland, rhododendron walks, parkland and ornamental ponds, to produce a rich and varied landscape for all visitors.

With woodland dating back to 1754, there is a great deal to appreciate including oak, elm, sycamore and horse chestnut trees. If you have an interest in our feathered friends, you will spot swallows, housemartins, tawny owls and collard doves amongst the trees, while the pond area is home to swans, moorhens, mallards, and herons. Our four-legged friends the fox, stoat and weasel also live here.

Rozelle House is home to the Maclaurin Galleries which is a real attraction for both visitors and locals.

Without doubt, the most original and stunning part of Rozelle Park is its display of wooden carvings. The carvings are of World War I soldiers, shown in various poses and has been assembled as a memorial to the fallen soldiers. The statues are thought-provoking, but a sensational work of beauty and you just have to stop to look.

Corsehill Gardens

One of Ayr’s best-kept secrets, Corsehill Gardens are a treasure trove for garden-lovers and walkers alike. It is incredibly beautiful and the scented air in spring is a real treat for walkers. There are beds of flowers to enjoy, plus a walled garden hiding more flowers and plants. It’s a real tonic for the senses and a beautiful place to relax.

Whether you are well-acquainted with Ayrshire or just visiting, there are so many places to enjoy.
