The team at Scala Radio are incredibly saddened to hear of the passing of our much-loved colleague and friend Jamie Crick, following a short illness.

Jamie was a true music broadcaster, having been part of Scala Radio since our launch in 2019. He also had a daily programme on our sister station Jazz FM where he’d been part of the presenting line-up for almost 10 years. Prior to that, he was at Classic FM for 20 years.

Jamie’s passion for classical and jazz music was extraordinary and his knowledge, especially of classical music, was unrivalled. Over the years he had hosted a series of concerts for the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra Gala night, as well as presenting at The Sage Gateshead with the Royal Northern Sinfonia and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra at The Philharmonic Hall in Liverpool, and the Liverpool International Music Festival outdoor event at Sefton Park in the city.

He was also involved in the record attempt to create the world’s largest orchestra with Sir Simon Rattle at Symphony Hall in Birmingham.

Jamie’s broadcasting career started at County Sound Radio at Guildford in Surrey. He has also worked at BBC Local Radio and LBC. He was also the Creative Director of Gaydar Radio – the UK’s first LGBT+ radio station which twice won a gold Radio Academy Award – and launched a radio station devoted to musicals and movies called Encore Radio in 2017.

Alongside his passion for broadcasting, Jamie was integral in many of the UK’s Pride celebrations, having organised some of the marches over the years. He was also part of the Poppy Factory's management committee, which makes the famous poppies used by the Royal British Legion.

Nick Pitts – Jazz FM and Scala Radio’s Content Director - has said of Jamie: “Jamie was a dear friend to our teams and our listeners. He was also a good friend to me and loved being part of our radio family here at Scala Radio and also on our sister station Jazz FM where he presented the daily afternoon drive show. His passion for classical music from his 25 years of playing it on the radio was unrivalled. His love of his Sunday 60-minute “Westend Weekend” programme was something he was incredibly proud of and worked on right across the week ahead of the broadcast. Jamie will be missed by the entire of the Scala Radio team and all of us at the station share our deepest condolences with his family and loved ones at this time.”
