In honour of World Mental Health Day on October 10th, we're broadcasting a special 3-part series, 'Mindset with Dr Amir Khan', exploring the links between music and mental health. The show will be hosted by NHS doctor, bestselling author and GP on Lorraine and Good Morning Britain, Dr Amir Khan.

In the first episode, Dr Amir will dig deep into the correlations between classical music and mental wellbeing by exploring the benefits classical music can bring to us. Looking at how it can reduce people’s anxieties by lowering cortisol levels, blood pressure, heart rate and even breathing rate, Dr Khan will also review findings that show it to improve sleep quality after surgery and explain how listening to classical music can also help relieve pain.

The following episodes will focus on what we can do to improve mental health within the context of music, such as active listening, dancing, and joining choirs.

Expect a wide variety of emotive music to soundtrack the findings, including pieces by Ennio Morricone, Beethoven and Mozart, the softer and inspiring melodies from contemporary composers like Olafur Arnalds, Keaton Henson and Ola Gjeilo and a few surprises, such as a piano arrangement of the TLC hit ‘No Scrubs’!

Speaking ahead of the series, Dr Amir Khan said, “It is fantastic that initiatives such as World Mental Health Day bring conversation on the subject to the forefront, and even better that Scala Radio is using its platform to amplify it. Bringing my own medical knowledge and personal experiences to the show, I’m honoured to have this opportunity to explore exactly how classical music can be beneficial to us.”

Mindset on Scala Radio with Dr Amir Khan starts on Sunday 9th October from 6-8pm.
