The showbiz world was left in shock earlier this week when Cheryl Tweedy and Liam Payne announced they'd decided to split, just one day after Cheryl celebrated her 35th birthday. Now, just a few days after the announcement, Cheryl's best friend and former Girls Aloud band mate Nicola Roberts has given fans an update.

Nicola appeared on today's episode of Loose Women alongside Christopher Harper to talk about the campaign they are working on to end child exploitation, but the Loose Women panel couldn't resist asking how her friend is doing.

When the panel asked of any potential Girls Aloud reunions, Nicola admitted she's been working on her own solo music, as well as helping Cheryl with her upcoming new album for the past six months.

After Carol, Nadia, Stacey and Christine asked Nicola how Cheryl was doing following her break-up, she said, "She’s good, she’s ok. She's on the mend."

Mum-of-one Cheryl celebrated her 35th birthday at the weekend, enjoying time with Nicola, Kimberley Walsh and her other close friends, including her PA Lily England.

Posting a number of photos to her Instagram account, Cheryl wrote, 'Happy birthday with my ride or dies 😍🎈🎉.. (including Jon pulling a funny face in the background) 😏'. sic

Then, just one day later, Cheryl broke the news on Twitter that she'd split from former One Direction singer Liam Payne. Sharing the same statement, the pair wrote, 'We are sad to announce that we are going our separate ways. It's been a tough decision for us to make. We still have so much love for each other as a family. Bear is our world and we ask that you respect his privacy as we navigate our way through this together.' sic

The former X Factor judge has since remained relatively silent on her split, but she did feel the need to defend her mum after a number of news outlets were 'blaming' her for the split. Taking to her Twitter account, Cheryl wrote 'I hate responding to stuff esp at such difficult times but I cannot sit here and listen to such nasty, false articles regarding my mam. I don't know why they involve her in stories about me. I can assure you she has absolutely nothing to do with any of it. I am a grown woman who is capable of dealing with my own life. She is a soft and kind woman who doesn't deserve to be dragged into something that has nothing whatsoever to do with her'. sic
