2023 was quite the year for Mae Muller, after representing the UK at Eurovision in May, she released her debut album 'Sorry I'm Late', as well as 'Feels This Good' with Sigala and Caity Baser featuring Stefflon Don. Despite announcing she would be stepping back from music in January 2024, just a few months later in April, Mae headlined a show in London at a Club NME event held at London’s Scala.

Who is Mae Muller?

Mae is a British singer who has released a number of popular songs including 'Feels This Good' with Sigala, along with Caity Baser and Stefflon Don. Mae is also known for her song 'Better Days' with Neiked and Polo G, and for supporting Little Mix on 'LM5: The Tour' in 2019.

When Mae was just nine-years-old she appeared in Mika's music video for 'Grace Kelly', dancing in a lime green ballgown as she lip-synced to Grace Kelly's dialogue from The Country Girl.

Mae released her debut album titled 'Sorry I'm Late' on 29th September 2023. Back in May she wrote: 'MY DEBUT ALBUM SORRY I’M LATE OUT SEPTEMBER 29TH!!!

Mae Muller at Eurovision

Mae represented the UK at the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest. As the UK is one of the Big Five, Mae went straight through to the Final which took place on Saturday 13th May 2023 in Liverpool. The Semi-Finals took place on 9th and 11th May 2023.

Following the news that Mae was to represent the UK, she said: "I'm SO excited to participate in Eurovision this year and represent the UK! I've loved watching Eurovision all my life, so to compete in such a massive music competition is simply brilliant. I’m a huge fan of so many of the artists that have found success at Eurovision, from ABBA to Måneskin!"

She added: "Sam Ryder was so amazing last year and proved the UK can be back on the left-hand side of the leader board! I wrote the song ‘I Wrote A Song’ a few months ago when I was going through a hard time and wanted to feel empowered about relationships, so for it to be chosen for this year’s UK Eurovision song is honestly a dream."

What were the UK results for the Eurovision Song Contest?

Sweden's Loreen won the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest, and unfortunately Mae was left with just 24 points. The singer took to Instagram in a now-deleted post, after the results to tell thank her fans for their support.

She wrote: 'what an experience ❤️ just wanted to say thank you for all your support over the last few months, it’s been overwhelming. last night we didn’t get the result we had hoped for but i will remember the energy in that room forever!!! can’t wait to see you all again soon, i had a f-cking fabulous time ❤️'. What advice did Cheryl Baker (formerly of UK entry Buck's Fizz) give Mae Muller?

Following Eurovision, Cheryl told ICE 36 that Mae Muller should stay off social media: "Don’t read anything," she said. "There are always going to be the haters. There are always going to be people that relish in bringing you down.

"You can have hundreds of thousands of people patting you on the back and saying how amazing you are, but you’ll always remember that one nasty comment."

Yes, there is a music video for 'I Wrote A Song', the music video features Mae along with some dancers. The video is cleverly shot flicking between scenes that you think are 'normal size' before a 'giant' Mae appears and puts things into perspective.

Who wrote the UK Eurovision 2023 entry?

According to her TikTok video, Mae wrote the song about a guy who annoyed her. She told her fans: "I was really annoyed at this guy, I wanted to do something crazy, maybe burn his house down, I don't know, but instead I took the high road and wrote a song, and that's called growth ladies and gentlemen."

A press release later revealed the song was co-written with Lewis Thompson, who has written David Guetta, Joel Corry, and RAYE's song 'Bed', and Karen Poole who has written for Kylie Minogue, Lily Allen, and David Guetta.

Mae Muller's statement about taking a break from music

In January 2024, Mae announced she would be taking a break from music, she told her fans: 'despite my achievements, at times i've felt like i lost sight of what i was doing this for and why i started music in the first place.

'the pressure of chasing hits for so long (which many signed artists can relate to) wore me out, which caused me to make decisions which didn't sit well in my gut personally or creatively. music went from being my passion to becoming a job churning out songs to try and impress exec's or get a playlist spot for radio, which is not why I started doing this. I started it because I love it and I want to get back to that.' (sic)

Mae's return to music

In April 2024, Mae returned to music for a headline gig at London's Scala, where she performed at the Club NME event, which also included Self Esteem and Raven Mandella. The day before her performance she shared her setlist which included her Eurovision song 'I Wrote A Song'.
