Ariana Grande's fourth album 'Sweetener' has reached a milestone in 2023, celebrating its fifth birthday after it was released in August 2018. The record, which was Ari's first since the devastating attack at her Manchester concert in May 2017, marks her emotional recovery from the trauma and anxiety that she experienced.

To commemorate five years since the album was released, Ari posted a photo of herself in what looks like a behind-the-scenes shot for the album artwork. We've collected a whole host of facts, stats and interesting tidbits about 'Sweetener' to mark the anniversary!

What was the release date for 'Sweetener'?

Ari released 'Sweetener' as her fourth studio album on 17th August 2018, having begun recording the record way back in July 2016 shortly after the release of 'Dangerous Woman' in May 2016. However, in September 2017 she confirmed she was still working on it in an interview with Billboard.

"It’s been very challenging for all of us involved," she admitted, continuing: "So it would be nice to really hold my loved ones close for a little while, stay home for a little bit.

"But knowing me, I’m going to be in the studio because I love it, and I want to create. I started an album already a year ago, over a year ago, but I want to keep creating, and it’s not done yet. So I’m going to take my sweet time, so I’ll be rested and ready to go again as soon as possible."

The album peaked at Number 1 in 23 countries around the world, including the UK and the US, and has been certified Platinum in the UK by the BPI and 2x Platinum in the US by the RIAA. Pretty incredible!

'Sweetener': The album artwork

The album cover for 'Sweetener' is a simple photo of Ariana with very lightly coloured hair, upside down on a plain background. It was taken by Dave Meyers, who also directed the music videos for both 'No Tears Left to Cry' and 'God Is a Woman'.

In a now-deleted tweet, Ariana explained the reason for the upside down shot, revealing that she'd shown the image to a friend: 'I showed Aaron a photo and he was sitting opposite me and he said, 'I even love it upsidedown' and that was kind of it for me. At the time, I had been feeling v 'upsidedown' for a while and the simplicity of that was like, 'Oh duh, wow. My bestie a genius.' Everything clicked after that.'

After a fan on Twitter realised that it was her first album artwork in colour, she replied: 'issa new chapter ☁️ for the first time my life is in color as well.'

Did the album win any awards?

Ari took home one of the most prestigious awards in music for the record - none other than a Grammy Award. She won Best Pop Vocal Album in 2019, going up against Camila Cabello, Kelly Clarkson, Shawn Mendes, P!NK and Taylor Swift.

Did Ariana tour the 'Sweetener' album?

She did indeed! Ariana incredibly released her fifth studio album only six months after the release of 'Sweetener', putting out 'thank u, next' in February 2019. Her tour was therefore in support of both records, starting in March 2019 and finishing in December 2019.

The tour was particularly poignant as it was the first world tour she'd performed since the devastating attack in Manchester at her show in May 2017, where 22 people sadly lost their lives.

Support acts for the tour included Normani, formerly of Fifth Harmony, Social House and Ella Mai. Ari began the tour in March 2019 and performed 101 shows through to December 2019, with an approximate attendance of 1.3 million people.

When did Ariana confirm the album name?

Ariana confirmed the name of 'Sweetener' in an interview on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon in May 2018, explaining the reasoning behind the name: "It's kind of about bringing light to a situation, or to someone's life, or someone else who brings light to your life."

Ariana released 'No Tears Left To Cry' as her first music since the devastating attack at her Manchester concert in May 2017, with the music video for the track including a beautiful tribute to her fans who lost their lives.

After the tragic events in Manchester, Ariana chose to take a break from music and posted very little on her social media accounts.

The singer did return to Manchester for the One Love Manchester concert in June 2017, joined by Little Mix, Justin Bieber and Robbie Williams amongst other acts who all performed at the concert.
