Fans were shocked earlier this month when they heard that Ariana Grande and her boyfriend of two years, Mac Miller, had split up, and now the singer has released a statement in response to a sexist criticism from a 'fan'.

The tweet from a 'fan' called Elijah Flint said, 'Mac Miller totalling his G wagon and getting a DUI after Ariana Grande dumped him for another dude after he poured his heart out on a ten song album to her called the divine feminine is just the most heartbreaking thing happening in Hollywood.'

Ariana responded to Elijah with a statement saying that he was minimising 'female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship'.

'how absurd that you minimise female self-respect and self-worth by saying someone should stay in a toxic relationship because he wrote an album about them, which btw isn’t the case (just Cinderella is ab me). I am not a babysitter or a mother and no woman should feel that they need to be.' sic

The singer's statement continued, ‘I have cared for him and tried to support his sobriety & prayed for his balance for years (and always will of course) but shaming/blaming women for a man’s inability to keep his s--t together is a very major problem.

‘Let’s please stop doing that. ‘Of course I didn’t share about how hard or scary it was while it was happening but it was. I will continue to pray from the bottom of my heart that he figures it all out and that any other woman in this position does as well.’ sic

Ariana's response has since attracted nearly 200K likes and 58K retweets, with many of her fans supporting her. The person who posted the initial tweet has also responded to the singer with a statement of his own saying, 'My sincerest apology, Ariana'.

Ariana has since replied to Elijah saying 'thank you for hearing me, i appreciate your response v much. sending you love.' sic

Ariana's initial response to the tweet was the first time that the 'No Tears Left To Cry' singer has hinted at her relationship problems with Mac. It was earlier this month that reports first circulated that the couple might have split, with the American website People confirming earlier reports by TMZ that the couple have decided to split, but will remain friends.

Just a day later Ariana then confirmed their split by releasing a very loving statement about her ex-boyfriend to her Instagram Story.

Sharing a photo of the former couple together, Ariana wrote, 'Hi! This is one of my best friends in the whole world and favorite people on the planet Malcolm McCormick. I respect and adore him endlessly and am grateful to have him in my life in any form, at all times regardless of how our relationship changes or what the universe holds for each of us! Unconditional love is not selfish. It is wanting the best for that person even if at the moment, it's not you. I can't wait to know and support you forever and I'm so proud of you!!' sic
