Halloween: A plea not to break lockdown rules

Published 31st Oct 2020

We're being reminded not to break lockdown rules to celebrate Halloween.

Dorset Police have issued a warning, asking people to respect the "rule of six" both indoors and outdoors.

While health bosses in Hampshire are urging trick or treaters not to go door-to-door to try to limit the spread of Covid-19.

Simon Bryant, Hampshire County Council’s Director of Public Health, said: “There are still ways for people to have fun this Halloween, but it’s important we all follow the guidance for doing so safely - to limit the spread of Covid-19 and help protect our families and loved ones.

“Local coronavirus infection rates are on the rise, and Hampshire’s Covid alert level is at Medium.

"This means that, whatever your plans for half-term and Halloween, we must all continue to observe social distancing, keep washing our hands frequently, and wear a face covering wherever required to do so.

"Anyone wishing to meet others should follow the Rule of Six, which allows groups of up to six people only to get together both indoors and outdoors.

"By following this crucial Government guidance, we have the best chance of limiting the further spread of the virus and keeping ourselves and each other safe.”

Instead of Trick or Treating this year, why not try some of these alternative Halloween activities at home:

  • Costume dress-up: become a ghost, vampire or witch for the night. Perhaps hold a competition with prizes for the scariest and funniest outfit
  • Have a spooky indoor picnic: test your culinary skills (eye of newt, anyone?)
  • Decorate the house with fake cobwebs, balloons and glow-in-the-dark skeletons
  • Carve pumpkins: get creative with Halloween’s most traditional activity
  • Spot the pumpkin: take a walk around your neighbourhood and see who has a pumpkin in their window
  • Treasure hunt: hide Halloween treats for the members of your household to find
  • Enjoy a Halloween movie night: there’s never a shortage of spooky movies on our TVs at this time of the year that are suitable for all ages
