Glaswegians have an amazing array of colloquial words and phrases which you might find baffle and entertain our visitors. As well as using traditional Scottish words like wee, aye, and lassie, we also have our own take on English words and plenty of unique additions to our language as well.
If you are from Glasgow, you'll surely know all of the meanings but if you're not a local this might help you brush up on the Weegie lingo. You also might find the Glaswegian accent takes a bit of getting used to and we have our own way of pronouncing things!
We've put together a list of some of our favourite language gems to come out of Glasgow.

Hackett
What does hackett mean?
A word used to describe someone who is unattractive.
"Aw man that lassie was pure hackett".
Stoater
What does stoater mean?
A very attractive person.
"Yass, she is a right stoater mate"
Winch /get aff wae..
What does winch/get aff wae mean?
If you have a winch or 'get aff' with someone, you have been lucky enough to have had a snog.
"She was hackett but ah got aff wae her anyway".
Patter
What does patter mean?
Banter, chat.
"She was hackett but ah got aff wae her cos her patter was brilliant".
Mince
What does mince mean?
Rubbish.
"His patter was mince, man".
The Dancin’
What is 'the dancin''?
Refers to going clubbing.
"I got aff wae him at the dancin'"
Hoachin’
What does hoachin' mean?
A crowded place.
"We went to the dancin', it was pure hoachin' man"
Crabbit
What does crabbit mean?
Grumpy.
"Naw am no seeing him again, he was pure crabbit"
Donder
What does donder mean?
A walk.
"We went for a wee donder efter the dancin'"
Ma bit
What does 'ma bit' mean?
Where I live.
"We went for a donder back to ma bit"
Piece
What is a piece?
A sandwich.
"Ah got ham in ma piece"
Ginger
What is ginger?
Fizzy drink.
"Ah want some ginger wae ma piece"
Outsiders
What are outsiders?
The end pieces of a loaf of sliced bread.
"Ma piece is made from outsiders"
Scunnered
What does scunnered mean?
Annoyed.
"I've lost ma piece and ginger, scunnered man"
Loupin’
What does loupin' mean?
Throbbing in pain.
"Gonnae shut it, ma heid is loupin' man"
Dinghy
What does dinghy mean?
To give someone the cold shoulder.
"Supposed to be ma pal but totally dinghied me"
Gee me the boak
What does 'gee me the boak' mean?
To make you feel sick.
"What's that smell? It's gieing me the boak"
Poke
What is a poke?
A bag.
"Gonnae geez a poke ae chips"
Carry Out
What is a carry out?
Alcohol bought from an off-license.
"Am sorted man I've got a carry out"
This list will surely help you on your visit to Glasgow. And remember, if you’re hoping for a winch with a stoater make sure your patter isn’t mince.
The dancin’ is your best bet as it’s probably hoachin’, but careful, if you meet someone hacket with nae patter, you could end up scunnered.
